INSPIRATIONAL BSL DIRECTOR OF MACROBERT ARTS CENTRE ANNOUNCED AS FINAL RECRUIT OF 2019 FOR THISTLES #STIRLINGSHINES CAMPAIGN
Thistles, Stirling has announced Petre Dobre, the inspirational BSL Director of Macrobert Arts Centre as the final recruit of 2019 to its #STIRLINGSHINES campaign.
Aiming to discover the undiscovered, #STIRLINGSHINES has been celebrating the achievements of local talent throughout the year. From rising stars of sport and groundbreaking chefs to designers and musicians working internationally, the spotlight has been shone on them by Thistles.
Now as the year concludes, and coinciding with the partnership between Macrobert Arts Centre and Thistles on The Snug and pop-up cinema in the centre, #STIRLINGSHINES is celebrating Petre’s success.
Originally from Romania, the 26-year-old moved to Scotland four years ago after gaining a place on the ground-breaking BA Performance in British Sign Language and English at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The course opened his eyes to the wealth of possibilities available in performance and to develop his skills and experience that he could not have achieved elsewhere.
In 2016 Petre was the recipient of a prestigious Dewar Arts Award – an initiative created in memorial to Scotland’s first First Minister, Donald Dewar and one which supports the nation’s brightest and best young artistic talent. The Award allowed Petre to continue his studies and to fully focus on his ambitions to become a performer in theatre and film.
Now, having graduated, and with a clutch of successful performances to his credit, Petre was recently appointed BSL Director Associate of Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling. As well as working with the Macrobert marketing team to create greater accessibility to deaf audiences, Petre has been supporting staff, most of whom have now undertaken Deaf Awareness Training and learned some basic sign language.
Clearly relishing the opportunity at Macrobert, he says;
“I love to meet and engage with new people and although I’m deaf this is definitely not a barrier. The work I create is visual, making it accessible to both deaf and hearing and this is the most satisfying part of my work.”
Outwith his day job, Petre is embracing life in Scotland and especially enjoys hillwalking around Stirling’s fantastic landscape, as well as visiting Skye when his schedule permits.
“I love learning about the rich history of Stirling, and Scotland has such an incredible culture. I have enjoyed and appreciated every moment living here and plan to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.”
Taking time out from his busy schedule, Petre is the latest recruit to the #STIRLINGSHINES campaign by Thistles, Stirling. Whilst not a stranger to the spotlight, this was his first fashion shoot.
Speaking about his day in Thistles, he said;
“I was very happy to be invited to take part in the #STIRLINGSHINES campaign.
“It was a new experience for me but I loved every minute of it, especially being styled.”
Gary Turnbull, Centre Director of Thistles added;
“Petre is an inspirational talent and a fantastic ambassador for BSL.
“It was a pleasure to welcome him into the centre and we wish him every continued success in his role at Macrobert Arts Centre.”
